<div style="text-align: left;">
Time is flying and I realised I have neglected my blog. So I thought I would talk about an exhibition that is currently showing at the National Gallery of Victoria (NGV). </div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Krystyna Campbell-Pretty supported the NGV back in 2015 to purchase a collection of amazing garments, collected by haute couturier Dominique Sirop, from the 1890s through to the 1970s. The collection totalled of 130 pieces, designed by such famous designers, Worth, Chanel, McQueen, Balenciaga and Schiaparelli. And even Laurent and Dior. </div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Krystyna Campbell-Pretty helped the NGV with this acquisition of this collection, </div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
in the honour of her late husband, Harold Campbell-Pretty. </div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEha4UYwrE2T589qYpjuvjplYcbJ3wz6Tvy2Y747VHCTby9kgjVjVqe9-2SAMWNnncxDko9jvk-zZ1g3Se8AqdQ1vB06iZgW9kAYi5bCkY8Vali54dCdbCX6uhXeZ_mIA4_1XmBpywkCtzU/s1600/03.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em; text-align: left;"><img alt="" border="0" data-original-height="1200" data-original-width="900" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEha4UYwrE2T589qYpjuvjplYcbJ3wz6Tvy2Y747VHCTby9kgjVjVqe9-2SAMWNnncxDko9jvk-zZ1g3Se8AqdQ1vB06iZgW9kAYi5bCkY8Vali54dCdbCX6uhXeZ_mIA4_1XmBpywkCtzU/s400/03.jpg" title="Jean-Philippe Worth Day Dress 1895" width="300" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
When I visited this exhibition with a friend, we made the mistake of starting at the end of the exhibition. It turned out to be the correct decision, because we were seeing the garments in the chronically order, backwards. So it felt like one was travelling back in time. </div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
The Exhibition is displayed amongst the permanent artefacts at the NGV. It's an interesting way of displaying the garments, but it makes one aware of the other objects in the NGV collection. </div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
The exhibition begins in the 1890s. I got such a thrill, seeing garments designed by the Worth clan. It was such a treat to see the details in these Worth garments up and close. </div>

<div style="text-align: left;">
I must admit, my knowledge on 1920's fashion is quite limited. I have been constantly exposed to 1920's fashion in the TV show's such as, 'Miss Fisher Murder Mysteries' or the later years in 'Downton Abbey'. So you can understand why I was so excited to see this little gem of a book. </div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
1920's Jazz Age is initially the book that accompanied the <a href="https://www.ftmlondon.org/ftm-exhibitions/1920s-jazz-age-fashion-photographs/"><b><i>exhibition</i></b></a> 1920s Jazz Age Fashion and Photographs at London's Fashion Textiles Museum back in 2016 - 2017. The publication covers the fashion, accessories and photography throughout the jazz age, 1919 to 1929. </div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
The first chapter gives the reader a general overview of the 1920's movement. It was a time of freedom for women especially, able to take off their corsets, cut their hair short and be more free with self expression. Music, fashion, politics, sexuality, First World War brought so many changes to the 1920's. </div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Fashion in the 1920's wasn't just flapper dressers, this is what modern people tend to just think of, due to Hollywood's interpretation of the 20's. Fashion expanded with the demand of women par taking in more sport, driving automobiles and employment opportunities. </div>

Continuing on with my costume overview for 2018 from<b> </b><a href="http://dressedforanytime.blogspot.com/2018/12/2018-costume-overview-january-to-june.html"><b>Part 1</b>.</a><br />
<b><br /></b>
<b>July</b><br />
<b><br /></b>
Our first costume event for the second half of the year, was a tour of <a href="http://theblock.com.au/"><b>The Block Arcade</b></a> in Melbourne, off Collins Street. It was a delightful tour, learning about the history and architecture of the arcade. Of course, our group was certainly the centre of the public's attention.<br />
<br />
I used Simplicity 2581 Pattern to make my jacket. Quite a good pattern, I was able to sew the jacket within a week. To match my skirt I made for Picnic at Hanging Rock event.<br />
<br />
One thing I find amusing about the day, when you look at the group photo, one would think we all organised to be in similar colour palettes. Which is not the case, we didn't organise it.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgavFNRtxX-3f-XngcowhmLGDcx1AU1oQlAkA67HoVU35f0xdEuxuKoMBeGI-zEg99sVmc9B_yjShuVGUCIWaa2LeARrRkmhOVq-ZM37f1dx1yt9mKd-ckfWLAg3CAMJdp8-WdUEoUXjz4/s1600/Collage.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="928" data-original-width="1539" height="384" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgavFNRtxX-3f-XngcowhmLGDcx1AU1oQlAkA67HoVU35f0xdEuxuKoMBeGI-zEg99sVmc9B_yjShuVGUCIWaa2LeARrRkmhOVq-ZM37f1dx1yt9mKd-ckfWLAg3CAMJdp8-WdUEoUXjz4/s640/Collage.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>

<h3>
<b>October</b></h3>
<br />
So in October I was transported to the 1970's. Rippon Lea Estate held it's annual costume exhibition, Super 1970's. In conjunction with the costume exhibition, events are held. So a 1970's Disco it is. <br />
<br />
I found this fantastic fabric from <a href="https://flashbackfabric.com.au/"><b>Flashback Wallpaper & Fabrics,</b></a> unfortunately they are not around anymore. I was a little nervous working with this fabric, because I hadn't worked with fabric that had so much texture, almost like an embossed look to it. In the long run, I need not have worried, it worked well with my sewing machine. I decided to make a wrap around dress, so I could wear it again in the future. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi-u-9pkFGVX801VodO6F1NYixfAI52JAfBXriIUpKaSBG6eeimUiZf4itGarZv66_xqAFIf84doGFlyc1D2ZmEe9Vl8_nCr3r8BrK3hpEBaG_qJJtIgjWfXtu7eWQE74FFmclUQtvIDhA/s1600/41955045_10216355880080259_4623850014349721600_n.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="960" data-original-width="960" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi-u-9pkFGVX801VodO6F1NYixfAI52JAfBXriIUpKaSBG6eeimUiZf4itGarZv66_xqAFIf84doGFlyc1D2ZmEe9Vl8_nCr3r8BrK3hpEBaG_qJJtIgjWfXtu7eWQE74FFmclUQtvIDhA/s400/41955045_10216355880080259_4623850014349721600_n.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
<br />
<h3>
<b>November</b></h3>
So our next event was organised by my friend <a href="https://www.instagram.com/rozaliagh/"><b>Rozalia</b></a>, an early Victorian Picnic, held at Werribee Mansion. I had this major plan to cosplay as Queen Victoria from the TV Series. I was defeated, so my costume ended up changing. I made my first bonnet out of buckram. I was very proud of it, and I enjoyed making it. Overall the outfit was satisfactory, but it's not my favourite.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
<br />
<br />
Last costume event for the year was a tour of the <a href="https://parkweb.vic.gov.au/explore/parks/yan-yean-reservoir-park"><b>Yan Yean Water Supply System</b> </a>to Melbourne. Yes you read correctly, a tour of the water supply system for Melbourne. Unusual, yes, but really interesting. The tour covered the history of Yan Yean Reservoir, Yan Yean Caretaker's Cottage, remains of Wallaby Creek Weir, Staff Quarters and Bear's Castle.<br />
<br />
I must say it was a challenge, because I was in a corset all day, and we had to get in and out of the bus all day, and even walk 2 kms. Overall a really interesting and wonderful day. <br />
<br />
Oh my outfit, I wore one of my old Edwardian Skirts, made a grey shirt and belt. Wore my little cape from previous costume event. All worked quite well.<br />

I have certainly neglected my costume blog this year, I seem to be spending my time either making costumes, reading, or just living life. So I will do an overview, but it will have to be separated.<br />
<br />
<h3>
February</h3>
February started with an event held up at <a href="https://www.visitmacedonranges.com/tourism_listing/hanging-rock/">Parks Victoria - Hanging Rock</a>. The theme was 'Picnic at Hanging Rock'. For those who may not be aware, a famous Australia novel takes place at Hanging Rock about a group of school girls who go missing, <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Picnic_at_Hanging_Rock_(novel)">Picnic at Hanging Rock by Joan Lindsay</a><br />
<br />
The book is set at the turn of the Century, 1900 on Valentines Day. So dress code was late Victorian or Edwardian. I chose to go Edwardian.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh5avm_hWMcEY4yd-zmosRzaIAgi4rk5Sj_6lbU7uoQ19xjX4BCPvvBtDExLZxN6nJYwuk7sW4nLeCOkAx_idwH4sM6AXkpMlz-KlMsYJdvuGwpZDEAekB6eqe-krhsh47IHjoMkof_XyY/s1600/Picnic.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="879" data-original-width="815" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh5avm_hWMcEY4yd-zmosRzaIAgi4rk5Sj_6lbU7uoQ19xjX4BCPvvBtDExLZxN6nJYwuk7sW4nLeCOkAx_idwH4sM6AXkpMlz-KlMsYJdvuGwpZDEAekB6eqe-krhsh47IHjoMkof_XyY/s640/Picnic.jpg" width="592" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Even though this costume looks simple, there was to much hand sewing for my liking. The lace on the shirt, which of course needed to be tighter and the black ribbon trimming on the skirt, is all hand sewn on. It was worth it in the end, but my poor wrist complained in the end. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
</div>
<div class="" style="clear: both;">
The next costume I semi completed, was for a friends 40th birthday. So what I mean 'semi completed', for the last 12 months I have been making a costume based on a colour fashion plate. I had completed the lower part of the costume, but not the bodice. I was having difficulty with the bodice. So I made the crazy decision to make another bodice. </div>
<div class="" style="clear: both;">

<div class="" style="clear: both;">
<br /></div>

<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<b>April</b></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<b><br /></b></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The 4th Annual Melbourne Regency Picnic came around so quickly. I decided to wear one of my old Regency Dresses. When I first wore it back at the 1st picnic, I had no stays at that point. This time I had stays, and it certainly improved the look of the outfit. The fabric was made in Korea and I purchased it from <a href="http://www.luccello.com.au/">Luccello</a> in Melbourne, Australia. Also to complete the outfit, I purchased reproduction 1700's spectacles from <a href="https://www.townsends.us/collections/eyewear">Townsends</a> in the USA. It was a successful picnic, looking forward to our 5th Annual Picnic in April 2019. </div>

<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<b>June</b></div>
I'm a volunteer for The National Trust of Australia. One of my volunteer jobs was to help in the sewing department. I contributed with others to sew large curtains, pillow covers, reproductions of a Victorian Cape and Bodice. I also got to make a reproduction of a boys 1895 dress. I was very fortunate to be able to analysis the original Victorian boys dress. Measurements were taken to draft a pattern, and I used muslin. The embroidery on the original dress, was the only element that wasn't reproduced. Now that the dress is completed, it is permanently up on display in the children's room at Rippon Lea.<br />

<h4>
<span style="font-size: large;">Super 70s </span><span style="font-size: large;">A Fashion Exhibition</span><br />27 July - 4 November</h4>
<div style="font-size: xx-large;">
<span style="font-size: x-large;"><br /></span></div>
<span style="font-size: x-large;">R</span>ecently I visited the latest fashion exhibition at The National Trust of Australia (Victoria) <span style="color: black;"><a href="http://www.ripponleaestate.com.au/"><b><span style="color: black;">Rippon Lea Estate</span></b></a> </span>in Elsternwick, Melbourne. This time it's the fabulous 1970's. To some people they care to forget the 1970's, with it's burnt orange and mission brown, but there was more to the 1970's than these two colours.<br />
<br />
The exhibition looks at the 1970's in Melbourne with the use of fashion, images and music. The costume exhibition has items by Prue Acton, Hilary Floyd, House of Merivale, and so on. I was pleasantly surprised by some of these fashion gems. So if you want to go down memory lane to the 1970's.<br />

I look back on 2017 and I can see that costumes I choose, make divisions in the year, like chapters in a book.<br />
<br />
So how did 2017 pan out, compared to 2016?<br />
<br />
<h3>
<b>The Edwardian Bathing Suit</b></h3>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjitku6fyn1Dli59XRoj75BmFE54TH8VLv6i0KE9I4Uw5bMZ4g8miXIE_bhjWPqdD6viPy-3jkkmT3y9ncevVTrE6ZJaB1esAUiWe71vLys9jSEpBjLB6VOXcTSOHmnosytzVQQS731kxs/s1600/Bathers.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="543" data-original-width="609" height="285" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjitku6fyn1Dli59XRoj75BmFE54TH8VLv6i0KE9I4Uw5bMZ4g8miXIE_bhjWPqdD6viPy-3jkkmT3y9ncevVTrE6ZJaB1esAUiWe71vLys9jSEpBjLB6VOXcTSOHmnosytzVQQS731kxs/s320/Bathers.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
This outfit was for a Victorian / Edwardian Beach day. I loved these Edwardian bathers from the <b><a href="https://www.modemuze.nl/collecties/badjurken-badkleding-vrouwenkleding">Gemeentemuseum The Haag</a>.</b><span style="background-color: white; color: #3f3f3c; font-family: "sourcesanspro" , "helvetica neue" , "helvetica" , "arial" , "nimbus sans l" , sans-serif; font-size: 15px;"><a href="https://www.modemuze.nl/collecties/badjurken-badkleding-vrouwenkleding"><b></b></a></span><br />
<b><br /></b>
I didn't have a pattern, check out <a href="http://dressedforanytime.blogspot.com.au/2017/01/designing-edwardian-bathers.html"><b><span style="color: black;">here</span></b></a> how I made them.<br />
<br />
To be honest I wasn't very happy with this costume. My mistake was, I didn't do a fitting. The idea was there, but I didn't execute it to it's full potential.<br />

<br /></div>
The Edwardian suit was originally constructed for a punting day at Royal Botanical Gardens here in Melbourne. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Check <a href="http://dressedforanytime.blogspot.com.au/2017/05/pattern-review-butterick-b6108.html"><b><span style="color: black;">here</span></b></a>, how I made it. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
I was extremely happy with this costume. Comfortable to wear, the fabric was a delight to sew with and I felt this costume suited me well, (excuse the pun).</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
I think by this stage of the year, it finally clicked with me, to search for good quality fabric. Also do a fitting!!!!</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
I wore the suit again, when we visited the <a href="http://coombeyarravalley.com.au/our-story"><b><span style="color: black;">Dame Nellie Melba Estate</span></b></a> in Coldstream, Victoria. It was a real thrill when I saw someone in an old photo at the museum wearing a similar suit to what I was wearing. </div>

<br />
This costume was a commission.<br />
<br />
My mother who is a funeral celebrant was conducting a funeral for a woman who follows the Wiccan faith. The woman requested that my mother wear a purple robe and red stole at her funeral.<br />
<br />
It meant a lot to me, that this would be suitable for funeral service. Even though it was a simple garment to make, I still felt a bit of pressure making it, due to thinking, would it be ok.<br />
<br />
Overall happy with it.<br />

<br />
<br />
I made the Georgian ensemble of items for a Georgian / Regency High Tea, to be held at The Gables.<br />
<br />
I was extremely happy with this outfit. I was amazed with myself that I completed all the components on time.<br />
<br />
Thankfully this costume was very comfortable to wear and easy to drive in!<br />
<br />
To see how I made each component check out my posts here:-<br />

<br />
<h3>
<b>Lover's Eye - The Jewellery</b></h3>
<div>
Lover's Eye also known as eye miniatures were all the rage in Georgian time. The jewellery was thought to be started by Prince of Wales later to be George IV. He sent a token of his love to Maria Fitzherbert. This act was frowned upon by the court, so he hired a painter only to paint the eye, so there was anonymity and decorum. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
I really find Lover's Eye fascinating and creepy at the same time, chuckle. So of course I had to have my very own Lover's Eye for my Georgian outfit.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjzWdoJjNdUNOoup9rfRYzijdWPdS_majkONiHrZH-j0cFzALB4U2O2yk9GsvyuKoqVMRnzqFUzhS6fCHMDhUkNjHJ5KbTueTbawghPO47oGbIKoI1HwFFfhFkL5ehQgK7BkivuIJWHVwE/s1600/IMG_3071.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="902" data-original-width="900" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjzWdoJjNdUNOoup9rfRYzijdWPdS_majkONiHrZH-j0cFzALB4U2O2yk9GsvyuKoqVMRnzqFUzhS6fCHMDhUkNjHJ5KbTueTbawghPO47oGbIKoI1HwFFfhFkL5ehQgK7BkivuIJWHVwE/s320/IMG_3071.JPG" width="319" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
<br />
My first step was to find a frame, this was a harder task than I thought it would be. Luckily I was able to find a suitable piece at my local Op Shop. So next step, to make the jewellery look more Georgian was to glue some fake purls around the frame. Lastly an 'eye'. I couldn't find a small enough image of my husband's eye, and he wears glasses. So I went the quick way about it, and just printed off an eye off the net.<br />
<br />
<br />
Thus end result, my own version of a 'Lover's Eye'.<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<h3>
<b>The Spectacles</b></h3>
<div>
I wear glasses, and I was tired of wearing modern day glasses with my costumes. So when I discovered one could purchase reproduction Georgian glasses, I had to do this. </div>
<div>

I found some spectacles which I liked the look of, I purchased them from an American company called <b><a href="http://www.townsends.us/personal-accessories-c-73/eyewear-c-73-46.html">Townsends</a> . </b>So I decided to buy the 18th Century Reproduction glasses. </div>

I was VERY happy with these glasses,they are sturdy and fit to my head really well. Now the lenses, this was the expensive part. Lucky, my local optometrist could change the lenses to my prescription lenses. The optometrists loved the glasses and of course asked where I got them. Luckily I was able to get new lenses put into them. They said they were so small, it was like replacing lenses for a child's set of glasses. </div>

<b>The Shoes</b></h3>
<div>
I purchased some second hand shoes from my local Op Shop, that had a heel that looked Georgian. I then proceeded to cover them with a dusty rose fabric. Then later I put some green trim on them (not seen in photo)</div>

Well it's that time of year when I start to think of what Book Reading Challenges I will attempt for the next year. Scanning through Pinterest I found the <b><a href="https://blbooks.blogspot.com.au/2017/10/2018-victorian-reading-challenge.html">2018 Victorian Book Challenge</a>,</b> perfect I thought. Checked out this reading blog by another Becky (spelt with a c) and she has so many reading challenges. Great! <br />

<b><span style="background-color: white; font-size: large;">MY AIM</span></b></h3>
I will only choose a minimum of 4 books, seeing I'm a slow reader and I need time to construct my costumes, thus Option D.<br />

<br />
Once the corset and hip /bum pad were completed I decided to make a Caraco Jacket, which is short<br />
version of an 'a la francaise' (without pleats) that end at the hip, giving the look of a peasant jacket.<br />

<br />
Many months before I found this gorgeous fabric which I felt was perfect, (for me), for a Caraco Jacket. The teal quilt fabric is designed by Di Ford-Hall and is part of the Bally Hall collection sold by <a href="https://www.andoverfabrics.com/Grid.php?groupId=26068&GroupName=Bally%20Hall">Andover Fabrics</a> online. However I was fortunate I could buy it at my local <a href="https://www.thequiltshop.com.au/">Quilt Shop</a>.<br />
<br />
I am one of those costumers, who needs a paper pattern to work off. I had the American Duchess / Simplicity Outlander inspired Pattern 8161, but it did not have the peplum. So I went to Janet Arnold's 'Patterns of Fashion 1' to seek inspiration and a pattern. So to achieve the look I combined the Simplicity and Janet Arnold Pattern to get the look I wanted.<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg8qtTkxXBUQ4iL0zf7pjGCTNI5pS6tRX8jqIO3oBTxaxkLdb0HazJY_jNsP_nLtTfaO6Y73Gk2blEXJ8788X_b-XNDwVtEsliyib7DsrR8C1qDT-NttWKICtYoIUVMybc1ktf-hrqqa0g/s1600/Arnold.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="579" data-original-width="1600" height="230" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg8qtTkxXBUQ4iL0zf7pjGCTNI5pS6tRX8jqIO3oBTxaxkLdb0HazJY_jNsP_nLtTfaO6Y73Gk2blEXJ8788X_b-XNDwVtEsliyib7DsrR8C1qDT-NttWKICtYoIUVMybc1ktf-hrqqa0g/s640/Arnold.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
I decided to use the peplum from the B Caraco Jacket describe in Janet Arnold's book, on page 26 and 27.<br />
<div>
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg9i6Elwbj0pSiP2d8QtbUyY6OaecvM2TsVaRKo2EVBTJHtyKRitvE5XSs9Pk10QdW7SuLXMtMViftweeATuW-IZE5emyu_s-kly9iiuU_vt4RD5lKMoMRgsZd7vwXeQjFkhujlZfJYVpg/s1600/IMG_3030.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1200" data-original-width="900" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg9i6Elwbj0pSiP2d8QtbUyY6OaecvM2TsVaRKo2EVBTJHtyKRitvE5XSs9Pk10QdW7SuLXMtMViftweeATuW-IZE5emyu_s-kly9iiuU_vt4RD5lKMoMRgsZd7vwXeQjFkhujlZfJYVpg/s320/IMG_3030.JPG" width="240" /></a></div>
<br />
I combined the Janet Arnold peplum pieces to Simplicity's Outlander inspired paper pattern. It all worked out quite well. So this simple solution has given me the confidence to think about combining patterns in the future.<br />
<br />
Lastly the petticoat was to be made. I used Simplicity's pattern for this, very straight forward and clear instructions. At first I didn't know what colour to choose, thankfully I had a friend help me choose a mustard yellow to complement the gold highlighting the birds in the Bally Hall fabric.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

Gosh it's been a long time since I last posted. No wonder I have had to make a robe for my mother, and for myself a major Georgian outfit from scratch. And of course life it's self happens.<br />
<br />
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjxru0GW4SROA4FXUh4stK2BYybfzdF2gYBV7tL5DN8hJlsS3c6Ap65JcOOossJUJQHl7oEtMi0Yu-UJnomBLweens8ciiKkRXFLkm7F8oS8NfNignfmpTx9TredgeYm0NHX0_Yd4t3LPo/s1600/b4254.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="707" data-original-width="514" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjxru0GW4SROA4FXUh4stK2BYybfzdF2gYBV7tL5DN8hJlsS3c6Ap65JcOOossJUJQHl7oEtMi0Yu-UJnomBLweens8ciiKkRXFLkm7F8oS8NfNignfmpTx9TredgeYm0NHX0_Yd4t3LPo/s400/b4254.jpg" width="290" /></a><br />
Like anything one has to begin with the foundations of the outfit. So I needed to make Georgian<br />
stays. I purchased the B4254 Butterick Making History Corset Patterns chose to make corset B.<br />
<br />
Corset A and B are virtually the same, except corset B allows the wearer to put the corset on by themselves, because it is laced at the front as well as the back. This is what I wanted.<br />
<br />
I don't know why I made the decision to hand sew the corset. Maybe I wanted more control, maybe I wanted to know what it was like to hand sew a corset, maybe I wanted to know what the dressmakers of the time went through. It was a good idea at the time, but half way through my poor hands were complaining. Overall I am glad I made this decision. Now that I look back, I really appreciate my corset more.<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiVsXyL-S3xrwz6f92UrM7-cXjQxxl-2KrL2O9ltXWV_g8qC_XJ4OE_GfmXw9LAqUIcA8vKGbXI-45jd4w7XCjSJjEQjk2aMe-KlNF_oE76T6uSODfKAsUcwuDIu1e7TR7IQFmukq8tKR0/s1600/17140947_10211421557285273_1745954665_n.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="800" data-original-width="600" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiVsXyL-S3xrwz6f92UrM7-cXjQxxl-2KrL2O9ltXWV_g8qC_XJ4OE_GfmXw9LAqUIcA8vKGbXI-45jd4w7XCjSJjEQjk2aMe-KlNF_oE76T6uSODfKAsUcwuDIu1e7TR7IQFmukq8tKR0/s400/17140947_10211421557285273_1745954665_n.jpg" width="300" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
4 Layers were used.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Top layer - Violet Jacquard Suiting</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Middle layer - Grey upholstery fabric</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
3rd Layer - Interfacing</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
4th Inner Layer - Purple Cotton</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjnse6VWYqlZt3WgjQHiFXJBeNcYb9DxCd4DxrzelV7neeRq4Y7F4rOA_j-RPHrLb8_NeByQGF1QTN3FcsTWFe5BB8I5RQk_edle1A73Iw8IWmMZlhtnXJj0ImqEmcoUp8D88lcmwU5lqs/s1600/IMG_2319.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1200" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjnse6VWYqlZt3WgjQHiFXJBeNcYb9DxCd4DxrzelV7neeRq4Y7F4rOA_j-RPHrLb8_NeByQGF1QTN3FcsTWFe5BB8I5RQk_edle1A73Iw8IWmMZlhtnXJj0ImqEmcoUp8D88lcmwU5lqs/s400/IMG_2319.JPG" width="300" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
I used spiral steel boning. Which is fairly easy to cut with little pliers. </div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgGPp_uLiYlshYlovUPr2E44QFJI2UtTzIWKFy87aiRmLodu-V6QyEVELUTGmlcTqS78RZRCk2VT2Deie_toSORlw9EXXQ8gOSsZiRQcVy8XJum2BH5VQ-jlUQqYcFlXRKR1RvPJ6JGItM/s1600/IMG_2317.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1200" data-original-width="1600" height="300" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgGPp_uLiYlshYlovUPr2E44QFJI2UtTzIWKFy87aiRmLodu-V6QyEVELUTGmlcTqS78RZRCk2VT2Deie_toSORlw9EXXQ8gOSsZiRQcVy8XJum2BH5VQ-jlUQqYcFlXRKR1RvPJ6JGItM/s400/IMG_2317.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
A sample of my hand sewing. </div>
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgkrkFDofUN00ELeq8ABCYTDYw0nH-cldiXf7QMqa84eGmcdXc-4pWfarJKtFjAbCV-XZXzm9ulz_5zUORwRZdCL6v7m9iG9esuwbpu83VF6LcZPYHmiJSGBVQ7yEfDcdsHJ2qho78UI64/s1600/IMG_2743.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1200" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgkrkFDofUN00ELeq8ABCYTDYw0nH-cldiXf7QMqa84eGmcdXc-4pWfarJKtFjAbCV-XZXzm9ulz_5zUORwRZdCL6v7m9iG9esuwbpu83VF6LcZPYHmiJSGBVQ7yEfDcdsHJ2qho78UI64/s400/IMG_2743.JPG" width="300" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
The end product!</div>
<br />
Overall I was very happy with the corset. The only changes I made to the Butterick pattern was to add more boning in the chest area.<br />
<br />
I do realise my binding is better on the left hand side. The binding on the right, is rather dodgy.<br />
<br />
I find it very comfortable to wear the stays and I can drive in them really well. Bonus! Overall the instructions were great and well illustrated. I hope to make the other 3 corsets at a later day. I recommend this pattern to a sewer who has some experience in making a corset.<br />

<br />
What an absolute delight to read Lynn Knight's social history book on buttons.<br />
<br />
Knight reflects on a collection of button's in a shoe box that have been passed down in her family.<br />
<br />
In each chapter, a button is selected. Knight writes about the buttons connection with her family and with its connection with fashion and society.<br />
<br />
An assortment of buttons like a shoe button, baby button, jet button. Mackintosh button, coat button. And my personal favourite the toggle button are just a small selection of buttons she discusses. When I see a toggle button, I automatically think of the childhood book character, Paddington Bear.<br />
<br />
Each chapter intertwines history and quotes, accompanying stories of her family. The Button Box is an excellent book to illustrate to the reader that the humble button is not just there to help us wear our clothes, the button is there to also tell a story.<br />

<br />
<br />
<h3>
1. How much space do you have for your hobby? Do you have a sewing room?</h3>
I am very fortunate, I have a small room that I classify as my sewing room, also I use the dining room table, when I need to spread out fabric for cutting.<br />
<br />
<h3>
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjrGAKzFmttztfU5Skag27_7ZY9pToPUoOYz4IId1SSjKS0W2xHcIr2PErDvinCk0iIM2VRyd8clnPx3OKLDsvLBz3GTK54d863S8_KzGPMlimUgJ0d3NUmTlptMW8wGdA3fNE_57ejZtY/s1600/FullDress.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1051" data-original-width="700" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjrGAKzFmttztfU5Skag27_7ZY9pToPUoOYz4IId1SSjKS0W2xHcIr2PErDvinCk0iIM2VRyd8clnPx3OKLDsvLBz3GTK54d863S8_KzGPMlimUgJ0d3NUmTlptMW8wGdA3fNE_57ejZtY/s320/FullDress.jpg" width="213" /></a>2. Which is your favourite piece of all time?</h3>
<div>
My favourite piece of all time, would be the Titanic Dress. </div>
<div>
It was a pain to make, but I felt I did an excellent job, </div>
<div>
working with chiffon for the first time. </div>
<h3>
<b>3. How old were you when you caught the sewing fever?</b></h3>
<div>
I only caught it recently at the age of 44.</div>
<div>
<b><br /></b>
<h3>
<b>4. In which era do you spend the most of your historical costuming time and why?</b></h3>
</div>
<div>
<b><br /></b></div>
<div>
Regency, because in the past I visited the <a href="http://janeaustenfestival.com/">Jane Austen Festival Australia</a>. I also run the <a href="https://www.facebook.com/melb.regency.victorian.picnic/">Melbourne Regency Picnic.</a> I love the this time period, unfortunately I don't always look the best in Regency attire. </div>
<h3>
<b>5. Is there something you didn't dare to make so far, but really can't wait to try?</b></h3>
<div>
A Georgian corset, I have only just started, and I think I am mad. I am hand sewing it! Would like to make an 'Outlander' inspired costume. </div>
<div>
<b><br />6. Which other hobbies do you have besides sewing?</b></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
I have a passion for Science Fiction, especially the TV series Doctor Who. I have loved Science Fiction since I was a child. Thanks for this hobby I have made many friends, been to many Sci Fi Conventions and even met many actors who have been in Sci Fi TV shows. </div>
<h3>
<b>7. How long do you research before starting a new project?</b></h3>
<div>
Ashamed to say I hardly research before hand, it's pretty poor really. I need to improve on this stage of the process.</div>
<h3>
<b>8. Why are you writing a blog about your sewing adventures?</b></h3>
<div>
The blog is a record for me, but also I like to share my journey with others.<br />
<h3>
<b>9. What is your families opinion of your hobby?</b></h3>
They think it's great! They are glad I have finally found 'my calling'. </div>
<h3>
<b>10. If sewing is not your main job, what is?</b></h3>
<div>
I work in a library and I do volunteer work at <a href="http://www.ripponleaestate.com.au/">Rippon Lea House & Garden</a> here in Melbourne. </div>

<br />
On the weekend I had the pleasure of attending a talk and see an exhibition to do with the Australian TV Show 'Doctor Blake Mysteries', starring Craig McLachlan and Nadine Garner. At the <b><a href="http://www.goldmuseum.com.au/category/whats-on/exhibitions/">Gold Museum in Ballarat</a>. </b><br />
<br />
The 2 hour talk , 'Behind the Seams' was an interview with costume designer, <a href="http://www.louisemccarthy.com.au/"><b>Louise McCarthy</b>,</a> and makeup and hair designer <a href="http://www.imdb.com/name/nm1643179/"><b>John Logue</b></a>. Hosted by <b><a href="http://circavintageclothing.com.au/">Nicole Jenkins</a> </b>from Circa Vintage Clothing.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjBs1-Tscbf9GB4VKTvDa44ZarWDaWHHsSf-VzPSTrAGHa4ewnzCS6am3wAuZzE28xsbdUx42-dRMcaKh0q1oc9fQzDio1iBWekEDB8otfHfF5sA7pzY4G6k2E_rEZDIoZcn0JXcLvp8lk/s1600/02.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="510" data-original-width="700" height="233" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjBs1-Tscbf9GB4VKTvDa44ZarWDaWHHsSf-VzPSTrAGHa4ewnzCS6am3wAuZzE28xsbdUx42-dRMcaKh0q1oc9fQzDio1iBWekEDB8otfHfF5sA7pzY4G6k2E_rEZDIoZcn0JXcLvp8lk/s320/02.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<h4 style="text-align: center;">
<i>Louise McCarthy and John Logue</i></h4>
<div>
<i><br /></i></div>
<div>
Louise McCarthy and John Logue talked about their training and career background. Both have been in the industry for many years. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
The audience heard fascinating insights on the process of designing an outfit for a character from beginning to end. I was amazed to hear that Louise and her team have around 6 weeks and John had a 2 week lead up. Also to add more stress, two episodes are filmed at the same time. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Louise explained where she may purchase original vintage fabrics or vintage clothing for the show. I was amused to hear that I visit the same fabric shops as her self. John talked about some of his techniques and tricks of the trade, to make sure the actor has the perfect hair silhouette. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
The 2 hour talk was a treasure to hear. I felt very fortunate to hear these talented people who produce the world of Dr Blake.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
---------------------------------------------------</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
So after the talk, I and my friend ventured to the Doctor Blake Exhibition. It's a small exhibition, but it's worth it, if you are a fan of the TV Drama. </div>

<br />
I bought this <a href="https://butterick.mccall.com/b6108"><b>Butterick B6108</b></a> Pattern many moons ago. I had no event planned to wear a suit to. Luckily a dear friend decided to plan a day of enjoying the art of punting on the lake at the <a href="https://www.rbg.vic.gov.au/visit-melbourne"><b>Royal Botanical Gardens</b></a> in Melbourne. I thoroughly recommend <a href="http://puntingonthelake.com.au/"><b>Punt Tours</b></a>.<br />
<br />
Most of my friends decided to attend in early Edwardian attire, but I decided this was the perfect opportunity to make my first suit.<br />
<br />
In the beginning I was going to make the pattern on the left. However I changed my mind after I made the skirt. I decided to then make the one on the right, and I am glad I did.<br />
<br />
The fabric of choice was wool. It is Autumn here in Melbourne, Australia, so wool was perfect. I knew the best place to purchase quality wool, was from <a href="http://crossleyjoblots.wixsite.com/crossleyjoblots"><b>Crossley Job Lots</b></a><b> . </b>Many of their fabrics are dating back 30 to 40 years. So the fabrics automatically have that period feel.<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
The skirt was pretty straight forward, however it was my first time making pleats with wool. Gee this fabric creased nicely under the iron. :-)<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgQA_ONe7dukU__MCqpN7ODSyhcDNamXKAbuwVGKiisrlsps7N4oyUUL6j7h-5lGxWVKWuG7QEgOvfhyphenhyphenRisvTRy0FiS4KhyKu6oUSPiOBRvbKnu1bFDE-DzIwzygpaiPYEnT1PjGqCbA9U/s1600/Pattern.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgQA_ONe7dukU__MCqpN7ODSyhcDNamXKAbuwVGKiisrlsps7N4oyUUL6j7h-5lGxWVKWuG7QEgOvfhyphenhyphenRisvTRy0FiS4KhyKu6oUSPiOBRvbKnu1bFDE-DzIwzygpaiPYEnT1PjGqCbA9U/s400/Pattern.jpg" width="290" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
Now with the coat. I was a little nervous, it was going to be a challenge, it was my first coat! I decided to make some changes with the pattern. I decided to eliminate the large collar flap but keep the smaller collar. My reason for doing this, I am a short person of plump build and the larger collar, I felt would overpower the look. So I removed it and moved the buttons to the top of the triangle flap. I felt the buttons would hold the flap better and gravity and the weight of the wool would do the rest of holding the suit in place. <br />
<br />
I also decided to make the cuffs smaller as well. When I placed the full size cuffs on the sleeve, I just had to laugh, they made my arms look very short. Thus I had to reduce the size of them as well, they worked, but I could have reduced them a little more.<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />

<br />
Overall the <b><a href="https://butterick.mccall.com/b6108">Butterick B6108</a> </b>pattern was a joy to make. Excellent instructions and illustrations. I used a combination of the sewing machine and hand sewed when it came to inside lining.<br />

<br />
It's January 2017 and I have finished my first costume!! I have surprised myself! <br />
<br />
Coming up in February a group of friends and I are donning our late Victorian / Early Edwardian bathers. So of course it was time to make another costume.<br />
<br />
I scoured Pinterest for many beautiful examples. A plain and simple 1909 Edwardian bathers took my liking. But I knew I was in a pickle, I had no pattern.<br />
<br />
I still fancy myself as a newbie to the historical costume scene and sewing as well. I need a pattern, I yet to have the skill to make my own pattern.<br />
<br />
<br />

<div style="text-align: left;">
So I decided to alter a modern pattern. I decided to use the Newlook No. 6784 Size A6 - 16 Pattern. I altered the pattern for the tunic (Dress A - Bottom Right Hand). I traced the pattern and cut it diagonally. With lots of altering etc, I ended up with a pattern I was happy with. </div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
The fabric I used was a black and white weave cotton. It had a real vintage feel, which suited the style. I then used plan black broadcloth cotton for the trim. Black and white gingham ribbon for the trim and lastly white / cream buttons. </div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Hopefully in late February I will have some lovely pics of the costume at the beach. </div>

<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">I still consider myself very new to the historical costuming scene. 2016 was the year that I leapt forward in my skills and knowledge. I'm now understanding patterns but I still have to learn about detail and choices of fabric, to make the garment look a little more authentic. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><br /></span>
<br />
<h3>
<b><span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">Regency Day Dress</span></b></h3>
<br />
<br />
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi59fG1kdZQtneIk5msFj2FPMbl-ulOKGuC-WjwuCWFsq77GXqdhud9jhtrP-BqYfMuc_QeCMjIpno_J8Kvoax78rcliGa4GL2YBdyZsD-gJSvhDXUq-9J7zu2LdLaR4BUdWxl8hAaoPsg/s1600/RegencyPic18jpg.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi59fG1kdZQtneIk5msFj2FPMbl-ulOKGuC-WjwuCWFsq77GXqdhud9jhtrP-BqYfMuc_QeCMjIpno_J8Kvoax78rcliGa4GL2YBdyZsD-gJSvhDXUq-9J7zu2LdLaR4BUdWxl8hAaoPsg/s400/RegencyPic18jpg.jpg" width="167" /></span></a><span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><br /></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">First costume for 2016 was a new Regency day time dress for</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><a href="https://www.facebook.com/melb.regency.victorian.picnic/"><b>The Melbourne Regency Picnic </b></a>held in March this year. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">I used my trusty old <a href="http://sensibility.com/"><b>Sense & Sensibility Pattern</b></a>, which never lets me down</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">The fabric for this day dress was cotton shirt fabric, it had a small tartan pattern which unfortunately doesn't really show up in photos. It was great fabric, but it tended to fly up a lot, if there was a gust of wind. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">As you can see I tried to have a little detail in the sleeves, not sure if it looked quite right. </span><br />

<b><span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">Edwardian Apron</span></b></h3>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEigiVtP297-Qk3aF0IjCWrwQhf-Mz4wn0_NoEWJw8-1Uj4gbI4LMdcwtuuQ99Am0w3BN370PGqppqDfRskLyvN6ydWsejaOfYYZkQm44KqB8Y_b_8_sxUUtj7zOSkeW3zTm2O0m_mGuako/s1600/01.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEigiVtP297-Qk3aF0IjCWrwQhf-Mz4wn0_NoEWJw8-1Uj4gbI4LMdcwtuuQ99Am0w3BN370PGqppqDfRskLyvN6ydWsejaOfYYZkQm44KqB8Y_b_8_sxUUtj7zOSkeW3zTm2O0m_mGuako/s320/01.jpg" width="213" /></span></a></div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">I really enjoyed making this pattern. Inserting the ruffles was a little tricky at first, but I finally got my head around it. Also another first, was sewing pin tucks. Time consuming, but looks great when they are finished. </span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">I used the <span style="background-color: white; color: #333333; font-size: 14.85px; text-align: center;">Butterick B6229 Making History Pattern, which I purchased from my local sewing store. </span></span></div>

This dress was loosely based on this plate I spotted. I feel it was really the colour that influenced me more than anything. As you can see I learn't how to make some ribbon trim for the base, which was fun. I also started to make more of an effort for my hair, with a proper hair style and a feather. </span></span></div>

<span style="background-color: white; color: #333333; font-size: 14.85px; text-align: center;"><span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">This outfit was a big challenge for me, because there were so many components to this outfit. So of course one needs a new frock! <br />
<br />
So off I went and purchased the Butterick B6190 History pattern. I just wanted a plain dress that I could make pretty quickly. I soon discovered, it wasn't the pattern that was going to take time, it was the type of fabric that I used that delayed me.<br />
<br />
So because it was evening wear, I purchased a lilac colour satin, pale creamy pink for the lining and burgundy organza for the over skirt.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjs7TeMO2UwguIBve78xxKGSC7WUX2RHpQ1b3pVlPTodTgVeclm34OWYOt3GEgRRTCnrV4vvTckvymbFnUMmEIizYHmDWfvDEy7NC2Hj5aBGc3dJoQZwbkAXmSZA42J0kTMgPHFd2gf90M/s1600/4c9b635927e387d74c5e8b25bca10803.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjs7TeMO2UwguIBve78xxKGSC7WUX2RHpQ1b3pVlPTodTgVeclm34OWYOt3GEgRRTCnrV4vvTckvymbFnUMmEIizYHmDWfvDEy7NC2Hj5aBGc3dJoQZwbkAXmSZA42J0kTMgPHFd2gf90M/s400/4c9b635927e387d74c5e8b25bca10803.jpg" width="290" /></a></div>
<br />
The Butterick Pattern has marvellous instructions, well illustrated and plenty of text description, I couldn't fault it. I chose to make dress B, which is the middle dress on the pattern cover. The pattern reminds me very much of a Regency dress, except the waist is further down. <br />
<br />
When it came down to the attaching the over skirt, that was a little tricky for my poor sewing machine and myself. Sewing through slippery fabrics is not my cup of tea. So the trick is to take one's time.<br />
<br />
Because I took my time with this dress, I didn't get to do as much beading as I wanted to. If I make another Edwardian dress, I will definitely go to town with the beading.<br />
<br />
Expect to do hand sewing as well as machine sewing. Using delicate fabrics and lace requires hand sewing. Overall I would certainly use this pattern again, it met my expectations.<br />
<br />

<br />
<br />
When I first spotted '<b><i>Fashion Victims : The Dangers of Dress Past and Present'</i></b>, the cover illustration just grabbed me. With it's whimsical macabre dancing woman to the raised red eyes. I knew I just had to have it.<br />
<br />
Fashion Victims, written by Alison Matthews David is about the history of women, men and children's clothing. How fashion harmed the maker and the wearer. Covering the time periods 1700's to the 1930's. However there are mentions of recent events, where fashion has harmed the maker or wearer.<br />
<br />
The book is divided into categories, each chapter covering a different aspect of fashion that caused disease, accidents and even death. Each chapter is illustrated with beautiful photos, cartoons and illustrations. Davids presents interesting facts with anecdotes and illustrations. <br />
<br />
<br />
Davids doesn't hold back on the explaining how the<br />
workers were treated badly, especially the <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

women and children. To illustrate how badly workers were treated here is a chromolithograph of damaged hands, the effects of working with arsenic to make artificial flowers.<br />
<br />
Reading the chapter 'Poisonous Pigments : Arsenical Greens' was fascinating, however I did have to laugh at myself. I was wearing green at the time, when reading the chapter, one became a little paranoid. <br />
<br />
<br />
<br />

<br />
<br />
Fashion Victims is a valuable resource. Each chapter has excellent detailed, EndNotes. The reader has the opportunity to explore more, if they wish.<br />

<br />
Fashion Victims is such an amazing book, it really took me on a journey of the past. I could tell Alison Matthews Davids has such a passion for this subject. Her passion was contagious and was a real joy to read, I would thoroughly recommend this beautifully illustrated and informative book, for anyone who loves fashion and history.<br />

I have an afternoon High Tea coming up with some friends. The dress code is Victorian or Edwardian.<br />
<br />
I decided on Victorian and to <b><i>loosely</i></b> based my outfit that the character Katherine Glendenning (Elaine Cassidy) wore in the TV series, 'The Paradise'.<br />
<br />
I already had a green skirt completed, so onto the bodice. I had never made a bodice before, so I went with a pattern company I knew would suit my standard of sewing. So I decided on <a href="http://www.trulyvictorian.net/tvxcart/product.php?productid=32&page=1"><b><i>Truly Victorian TV 400 1871 Day Bodice </i></b></a>Pattern, with the low neck line.<br />
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgy4dwslGqlj_cVCdkgO8S5sFQ_OSsg5kjz1eBhxgrYSkDtHHPW9Au_GwE065AQkSwy3QYrS2gFKprZzy8xfc6ePD9UZdiaHCuMN3HBWxlWt78IIDWpvNM4OkKqk7I8WZAxC3PgifB9_sE/s1600/0a4e68f1-4a53-4ccb-85fb-dcadeb3729a8.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; display: inline !important; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em; text-align: center;"><br /></a><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgy4dwslGqlj_cVCdkgO8S5sFQ_OSsg5kjz1eBhxgrYSkDtHHPW9Au_GwE065AQkSwy3QYrS2gFKprZzy8xfc6ePD9UZdiaHCuMN3HBWxlWt78IIDWpvNM4OkKqk7I8WZAxC3PgifB9_sE/s1600/0a4e68f1-4a53-4ccb-85fb-dcadeb3729a8.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; display: inline !important; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em; text-align: center;"><img alt="" border="0" height="200" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgy4dwslGqlj_cVCdkgO8S5sFQ_OSsg5kjz1eBhxgrYSkDtHHPW9Au_GwE065AQkSwy3QYrS2gFKprZzy8xfc6ePD9UZdiaHCuMN3HBWxlWt78IIDWpvNM4OkKqk7I8WZAxC3PgifB9_sE/s200/0a4e68f1-4a53-4ccb-85fb-dcadeb3729a8.jpg" title="Truly Victorian Pattern TV400" width="179" /></a><br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
I found this pattern matched my sewing abilities. When it came to 'Sizing Your Pattern' I was a little hesitant, because measurements are not my strong point. But I must say the explanation on how to adjust the front and back was explained really well, with an example for the sewer to understand. So full marks to 'Truly Victorian'.<br />
<br />
Then came the actual sewing of the bodice. I used purple cotton sateen and Japanese silk for the lining. I also used plastic boning that was already encased in fabric so this step was completed quickly.<br />
<br />
Also included in the instructions is a list of different types of ways you can decorate your bodice. For example, ruffles, braids, stripes and so on. You choose your decoration and there is a short description of what it is and how you can achieve the look.<br />
<br />
Overall this pattern was understandable, great explanation on how to adjust the sizing. I only wish there had been more illustrations. I would recommend this pattern for any first time bodice makers out there.<br />

<br />
I had a Jane Austen Ball coming up, so of course I needed a new frock! I decided to make a crossover gown, using a <a href="http://sensibility.com/"><i><b>Sense and Sensibility Pattern</b></i></a>. This pattern covers sizes 6-26DD.<br />
<br />
S&S patterns are very user friendly. I remember using their basic Regency Day dress pattern when I made my very first Regency dress. So returning to make the crossover gown was like returning to my sewing roots.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg5bHB3JT_z1d6uOFiVyTKbo7gBqcV0VW8eats62fOe61jFECYQIgT-Y3HrJlcWkp9PTLbR8FlGeAdvMJ8BgqJiCpmltcrx683BVhDn8TSSqmuFcPRqMIP0JSHIWcIrQRrJIygmjKIxlB4/s1600/Me.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg5bHB3JT_z1d6uOFiVyTKbo7gBqcV0VW8eats62fOe61jFECYQIgT-Y3HrJlcWkp9PTLbR8FlGeAdvMJ8BgqJiCpmltcrx683BVhDn8TSSqmuFcPRqMIP0JSHIWcIrQRrJIygmjKIxlB4/s320/Me.jpg" width="106" /></a>S&S provide clear instructions, each step is accompanied with basic black and white illustrations. Completing the crossover section of the gown worked well, however I did have to reduce each pattern piece so it would fit around my neck comfortably. I decided not to do the wrap around part of the gown, because I knew I would be dancing at the Jane Austen Ball and I didn't want the dress to fly open, that would have been most undignified.<br />
<br />
Overall I was very happy with this pattern. It suits sewers who are beginners all the way up to advance sewers. One can order the pattern from <b style="font-style: italic;"><a href="http://sensibility.com/blog/patterns/the-elegant-ladys-closet/">here</a> </b>at a cost of $17.95 US Paper Pattern or $9.95 US ePattern.<br />

For the last 3 years, I have been doing volunteer conservation / preservation cleaning at <i><a href="http://www.ripponleaestate.com.au/">Rippon Lea</a>,</i> a historical property here in Australia. I have learn't to keep a property clean, that it's a strenuous job and also repetitive. However I find it personally very satisfying. So during this time, I have come to learn and appreciate what the original maids / servants would have had to go through. <br />
<br />
Being a maid is a thankless job. One would get up early, stoke the fire, and depending on your rank you would have certain chores assigned to you. And always making sure you are in the background, not to be seen, just serve. <br />

Maid from the popular TV series, Downton Abbey</div>
<br />
So it was decided recently I and the other volunteer thought we would dress up as maids while cleaned. To make a Victorian style apron, I chose the Butterick B6229 Pattern. So here's little review.<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Overall I found this pattern easy to understand and instructions are quite informative. There are plenty of illustrations to follow. A glossary is included as well. The only time I had a little hesitation was when I came to Steps 15 to 18. This was to connect the waist band to the bib. I overcame these steps and was pleased with the result. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I machined and hand sewed this pattern. I felt there was too much fabric for my sewing machine to cope with, when sewing the waistband, so I hand sewed this section. I did alter the back of the apron to fit my needs. I connected the two shoulder ties to the waistband, by cutting the tie and using buttons to connect to the waistband. Overall I felt this Butterick Pattern really gave the historical look. Wearing the apron gives one that Downton Abbey feel. I would recommend this pattern. </div>
